The world's three main AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — do not officially work in Russia: their websites won't open without a VPN, registration requires a foreign phone number, and payment requires a foreign card. At the same time, in 2026 this is no longer a reason to go without powerful neural networks. We break down all the working methods: from direct access to alternatives that require no workarounds at all and are not inferior in quality.
We describe the technical side of the issue. Assess the legal aspects of using VPNs and foreign services yourself.
What exactly is unavailable
| Service | Website and app | Registration | Payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | blocked by the service itself | requires a foreign number | foreign cards only |
| Claude (Anthropic) | blocked by the service itself | requires a foreign number | foreign cards only |
| Gemini (Google) | partially: a Google account works, but AI features are restricted by region | Google account | foreign cards |
| Midjourney, Sora, Runway | regional and payment restrictions | depends on the service | foreign cards |
It is important to understand: these are restrictions imposed by the companies themselves based on account region and IP address, not blocks inside Russia. Therefore, the workarounds involve making you look like a user from another country to the service.
Method 1. Direct access: VPN, number, payment
The most complete option — the same as for users in Europe or the US, with all features and current models.
VPN
You need a VPN with servers in a country where the service is available (most European countries, the US, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia). Free VPNs work unreliably and are often already blacklisted by the services — ChatGPT and Claude require additional verification or block the account when the IP looks suspicious. A reasonable minimum is a paid VPN with a dedicated or lightly loaded IP.
Tip: turn on the VPN before opening the site and do not switch countries during use — changing regions within a session often triggers checks and temporary blocks.
Registration
ChatGPT and Claude require a phone number from a country where the service works. Options:
- a physical foreign SIM card — the most reliable way, if you have the opportunity;
- virtual number rental services — the number is needed once for a confirmation code, it is inexpensive, but some numbers are already "burned" and the service may reject them;
- registration via a Google or Apple account from a foreign region — sometimes allows you to bypass the number request.
For Gemini, a Google account with a region where AI features are available is enough; the region can be changed in the account settings, but Google verifies it against payment details and IP.
Paying for subscriptions
Russian cards are not accepted. Working options:
- virtual cards from foreign banks issued by intermediary services for a fee;
- cards from banks in friendly countries, obtained in person or through intermediaries;
- payment via a foreign-region App Store or Google Play topped up with gift cards;
- intermediaries who set up a subscription on your account for rubles with a 20–40% markup.
For one-off tasks, a subscription is not needed: the free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are enough for getting acquainted and for occasional work.
Risks of direct access
An account can be blocked when the IP changes, when the payment country and region do not match, or due to suspicious activity. Keep important conversations outside the service and do not tie work processes to a single account.
Method 2. Access via API and aggregators
If you need a model rather than a chat interface, there is a simpler path: API aggregators.
How it works. Services like OpenRouter and similar ones provide access to hundreds of models — GPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen — through a single key and a unified request format. Some of them accept payment in cryptocurrency or through intermediaries, and some Russian aggregators accept rubles directly.
Who it suits. Developers who embed a model into their product or bot; advanced users willing to install a client application (there are dozens, including open-source ones) and enter the key there.
Pros. No VPN needed for the API itself in most cases, pay-as-you-go pricing, free switching between models, access to the latest versions on release day.
Cons. No branded interface or features like voice mode, memory, and an app store; you need to figure out the client. Aggregator markups over official prices are 5–30%.
For bots and high-volume tasks, this is also cheaper than a subscription: fast models cost pennies for thousands of requests. We covered which ones to choose in the comparison of Claude Haiku 5.5, GPT-6 Luna, and Gemini Flash.
Method 3. Wrapper services and Telegram bots
The easiest path for a non-technical user is Russian services and Telegram bots that provide access to ChatGPT, Claude, and other models for rubles. There are hundreds of them, and they differ in honesty.
What to look for when choosing:
- whether the specific model and its version are stated — "GPT-6.1 Sol" inspires more trust than just "ChatGPT";
- whether there is a free trial period to compare the quality of answers with the original;
- how data is handled — your conversations pass through the intermediary's servers;
- whether there are context length limits — many wrappers truncate the conversation history to save money.
Suitable for: occasional use, users without technical skills.
Not suitable for: confidential data and tasks where a long context matters.
Method 4. Alternatives without workarounds
In 2026, this is no longer a compromise. Open models from China have caught up with Western leaders, and Russian services cover everyday tasks in Russian.
DeepSeek
A free chat without limits, accessible without a VPN, with the quality of DeepSeek V4 on par with competitors' paid subscriptions. Strong in code and math. In October, a desktop application was released that works with files on your computer. The main caveat is that data is processed in China.
Qwen Chat
Alibaba's chat on Qwen 3.7 models: the best Russian language among open models, image generation in the same window, without limits or VPN.
Kimi and Z.ai
Kimi K2.6 — for long documents and research; Z.ai on GLM models — for code and tasks where other models refuse. Both are free and accessible directly.
GigaChat and Alisa AI
Russian services: no issues with access, payment, or data jurisdiction, native Russian language and understanding of local context. They lag behind the leaders on complex tasks and in code, but they are sufficient for texts, letters, studying, and everyday questions.
Local models
Complete independence: an open model on your computer depends neither on blocks nor on service policies. A gaming graphics card is enough for compact models. How to set this up in 5 minutes — in the guide to running locally.

How to choose a method
You need specifically ChatGPT or Claude with all features (voice, memory, apps, projects) — direct access via VPN, despite the hassle. This is the only way to get the full product.
You need a model for a bot or application — an API aggregator. Cheaper than a subscription and without a VPN.
You need to occasionally ask a strong model a question — free DeepSeek or Qwen; to compare with the original — a wrapper with a trial period.
You work with sensitive data — Russian services or a local model. Western and Chinese clouds are equally outside your control.
You don't want to figure things out — DeepSeek. Open the site, ask a question, get a flagship-level answer. For most users, this is enough.
What is changing
The access situation is changing in both directions: services are tightening region checks, intermediaries are finding new paths, and alternatives are getting stronger with every release. Six months ago, the advice "just use DeepSeek" sounded like a compromise; today it is a full-fledged recommendation. We track the changes — new blocks, working payment methods, the release of models available without a VPN — and publish them in the channel as they appear.
