ChatGPT remains the most well-known AI assistant, but in 2026 it is far from the best free option for every task. Chinese labs are giving away flagship-level models without restrictions, Google offers a fast Gemini on its free tier, and Claude has become the standard for text and code over the past year. We have updated our review as of October 2026: we removed services that have lost relevance, added new leaders, and checked what exactly is available for free right now.
An important caveat: free limits change every few months. We indicate the state at the time of the update and note where limits are variable. We publish fresh pricing changes in our channel on the day of the announcement.
Why it's worth looking at alternatives
Free ChatGPT has three chronic problems: a message limit on the strong model, after which you are switched to a weaker one; queues during peak hours; and access and payment restrictions for users from Russia. Alternatives address these problems in different ways: some offer more free messages, others have no limits at all, and still others work without a VPN and accept Russian cards.
1. Claude (Anthropic)
Over the course of 2026, Claude became ChatGPT's main competitor in quality. In October, Claude Sonnet 5.5 was released — a mid-tier model that almost matches the flagship Opus 5.5 and outperforms GPT-6 Sol on long-running tasks.
What's free. The free plan gives access to the current Sonnet model with a daily message limit that depends on server load. File uploads, work with long documents, code generation, and artifacts — interactive documents and small applications right in the chat — are available.
Strengths. The best writing style on the market in Russian and English, precise adherence to complex instructions, strong code. Less "fluff" in responses than ChatGPT.
Limitations. The message limit is noticeable during active use; no image generation; access from Russia requires a VPN and a foreign phone number.
Best for: writing, editing, document analysis, programming.
2. Gemini (Google)
Google has the most generous free tier among the "big three." The free version runs Gemini 3.5 Flash — a fast multimodal model — and Gemini 3 Pro is available in a limited capacity. Gemini 4 Argon is on the way; it beat the flagships of OpenAI and Anthropic in benchmarks but is currently available only to testers.
What's free. A one-million-token context — you can upload a book or several large PDFs. Google search inside responses, image and video analysis, integration with Gmail, Docs, and YouTube.
Strengths. Up-to-date information from search, long context, speed. Through AI Studio, developers get free API access with limits sufficient for pet projects.
Limitations. On complex reasoning, Flash falls short of Claude and GPT; the writing style is drier. Some features are unavailable in certain regions.
Best for: working with large documents, tasks involving current information, multimodal requests.
3. DeepSeek
The main discovery of the past two years. The Chinese lab DeepSeek releases models at the level of closed flagships with open weights and a free chat without limits. The current version is DeepSeek V4. In October, the company released an open-source desktop application that works with files and a terminal like Claude Code.
What's free. A web chat and mobile app with no message limits, a deep reasoning mode, and internet search. The API is one of the cheapest on the market.
Strengths. Quality on par with competitors' paid subscriptions, no limits, works from Russia without a VPN. Very strong in math and code.
Limitations. Data is processed on servers in China — for work documents, this is a matter of company policy. It avoids political topics. Russian is good, but the writing style is drier than Claude's.
Best for: everyday tasks without limits, code, math, users without a VPN.
4. Qwen Chat (Alibaba)
The Qwen family is the broadest among open models: from compact versions for a home computer to the flagship Qwen 3.7. The web chat is free and combines a language model, image generation (Qwen-Image 2.0), and document work.
What's free. Chat without strict limits, a choice between several models, image generation and editing, file analysis.
Strengths. The best Russian among open models, free image generation in the same window, access without a VPN.
Limitations. The interface is less polished; on complex multi-step tasks it falls short of Claude and GPT.
Best for: general-purpose tasks when you need both text and images in one place.
5. Kimi (Moonshot AI)
Kimi K2.6 is another open model from China that joined the ranks of the strongest in 2026. The free chat is geared toward long documents and research tasks.
What's free. Chat without limits, a very long context, a research mode that searches across dozens of sources.
Strengths. Working with large volumes of text, agentic scenarios, access without a VPN.
Limitations. Less of an ecosystem and fewer integrations than Qwen; Russian is slightly weaker.
Best for: analyzing long documents and research.
6. Perplexity
Perplexity is an AI search engine that answers in detail and with sources. Over the year, the service added an agentic browser and deep research, but the core remains the same: a question — an answer with links.
What's free. Unlimited quick searches on the base model and a small number of Pro queries per day to strong models.
Strengths. Every fact is backed by a link; convenient for fact-checking and quick references.
Limitations. Not designed for creative tasks and long texts; the Pro limit runs out quickly.
Best for: fact-checking, search, topic overviews.
7. Microsoft Copilot
Copilot provides free access to current OpenAI models through Microsoft's interface, with image generation and Bing search.
What's free. Chat on OpenAI models, image generation, work with web pages and Office documents.
Strengths. Effectively a free ChatGPT with search. Integration with Windows and Office.
Limitations. A limit on conversation length, a more formal response style, some features unavailable outside the US.
Best for: Windows and Office users, quick tasks involving search.
8. Le Chat (Mistral)
A European alternative with a focus on privacy. Le Chat is free, fast, and works well with European languages, including Russian.
What's free. Chat on current Mistral models, search, Canvas for documents, image generation with a daily limit.
Strengths. The fastest generation among assistants, European data jurisdiction, minimal restrictions.
Limitations. Falls short of the leaders on complex reasoning; the ecosystem is smaller.
Best for: quick text tasks with privacy requirements.
9. Z.ai (GLM)
A chat from Zhipu AI on models from the GLM family. GLM-5.2 is one of the strongest open models for code under the MIT license, and in October GLM-5.3 was released with 753 billion parameters and minimal topic restrictions.
What's free. Chat without strict limits, strong code, agentic features.
Strengths. Code quality on par with paid subscriptions, few refusals.
Limitations. Russian is weaker than Qwen's; less documentation.
Best for: programming, tasks where other models refuse.
10. GigaChat (Sber)
A Russian model with native Russian-language support and completely free access via Sber ID.
What's free. Chat without limits, image generation via Kandinsky, work with files, code.
Strengths. No problems with access and payment, good understanding of Russian context, built-in image generation.
Limitations. Noticeably behind the leaders on complex tasks and in code; weak English.
Best for: Russian-language texts, tasks with Russian context, users without a VPN.
11. Alisa AI (Yandex)
Yandex's neural network, available through Alisa in the browser and apps. Over the year, the YandexGPT models have improved, and a reasoning mode and file handling have been added.
What's free. Chat, summarization of pages and videos, help with texts, up-to-date information from Yandex search.
Strengths. Russian language and local context, integration with Yandex services, no access problems.
Limitations. Falls short of international leaders in code and complex analytics.
Best for: everyday questions, summarization, users of the Yandex ecosystem.
12. Poe and aggregators
Poe by Quora and similar aggregators provide access to dozens of models through a single interface with a daily free limit. Convenient for comparing the answers of Claude, GPT, and Gemini to the same question without creating three accounts. The limits are not enough for constant work, but as a "trial run" it is the best option.

How to choose
You need maximum quality for text and code — Claude. If the limit gets in the way, DeepSeek as a free replacement without restrictions.
You need unlimited use and access without a VPN — DeepSeek, Qwen Chat, or Kimi. For sensitive data, keep the jurisdiction in mind.
You work with long documents — Gemini (a one-million-token context) or Kimi.
You need facts with links — Perplexity.
Russian-language texts and Russian context — GigaChat or Alisa AI; for more complex tasks, Qwen.
You want everything at once — combine them: DeepSeek for everyday use, Claude for important texts, Gemini for documents. All three are free, and switching takes seconds. If you're not sure where to start, take the AI service selector quiz — it will ask a few questions and suggest an option for your task.
What has changed since the beginning of the year
If you read the first version of this review in January: HuggingChat, Pi, Phind, and You.com have left the list — they either shut down or stopped being developed. DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, and Z.ai have arrived: over the year, open Chinese models have turned from an "interesting experiment" into a real replacement for paid subscriptions. The main trend of 2026 is that flagship-level quality has become free, and it now makes sense to pay not for the model, but for convenience, limits, and integrations.
